Eden Community Recycling has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence
September 15th 2005

Eden Community Recycling has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence {the second nationally} by Novelis Recycling (formerly Alcan) in recognition of the consistently high quality of aluminium used beverage cans supplied by the company for recycling.

In addition to providing sustainable recycling solutions in the Eden District, Eden Community Recycling offers work experience to adults with special needs from the Edington Centre. Cans are sorted and baled by volunteers from the Edington Centre.

Eden Community Recycling has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence {the second nationally} by Novelis Recycling (formerly Alcan) in recognition of the consistently high quality of aluminium used beverage cans supplied by the company for recycling.
Worldwide, Novelis recycles over 30 billion cans every year. In the UK the company operates it's only aluminium can recycling plant, at Warrington, Cheshire. The Certificate of Excellence is an award presented by Novelis Recycling to suppliers who consistently provide good quality material. The presence of contaminants such as glass, steel, paper or plastic can disrupt the recycling process, and also pose a health and safety risk.
Eden Community Recycling's Managing Director Colin Nineham comments:

'It is good to be recognised for all the hard work the team has achieved and this award is something that the volunteers can be proud of.'

Novelis Recycling Business Development Executive, Robbie Davies said: 'Eden Community Recycling must be congratulated for their achievement in maintaining excellent quality standards. Across the industry, levels of contamination in can bank material have traditionally been a problem both for contractors and the recycling plant. It is encouraging to receive good quality cans and also help support such a worthwhile scheme.'

The Excellence award in the gold category is the highest accolade in the CBEN awards. Colin Nineham, Managing Director with Eden Community Recycling recalled how 24 years ago he was scoffed at for his ideas on recycling but by sticking to his vision, the fledgling organisation had flourished to become the leading service provider for recycling in the area. He went on to thank all those who had given assistance to ECR in helping to make the award possible.

ECR's recycling services for businesses are now publicised in a colour leaflet, containing details of what materials can be recycled and how. A copy of the new leaflet was handed out to businesses attending the Cumbria Business Environment Network Awards Ceremony on 6 September 2005 in Penrith, at which ECR was very proud to receive the coveted Gold Excellence award.
