Businesses seeking help to deal with the mounting problem of commercial waste in South Lakeland are being offered help by an organisation in neighbouring Eden.
Soaring costs of waste collection, coupled with a growing desire to recycle rubbish rather than send it to landfill sites, has prompted serveral local businesses to seek a solution from "Eden Community Recycling" (ECR), a not for profit organisation that already runs a commercial waste recycling opertation in Penrith.
Now, partly thanks to grants from the LDNPA and the County Council's Waste Prevention Fund, it has extended its service into South Lakeland.
Businesses that have signed up include the Drunken Duck at Clappersgate, Chesters Cafe & Touchstone's at Skelwith Bridge, Hillthwaite House Hotel at Windermere, St. Matin's College at Ambleside, and Langdale Leisure at Great Langdale (who were the CBEN Gold Environmental Excellence Award winner for 2007).
ECR supplies businesses with large demountable cages, capable of holding upto 16 standard commercials-sized wheelie bins, which can take waste including glass, hard & soft plastics, paper, cardboard, cans, beverage cartons and polystyrene. Once the cage is full, ECR takes away the waste for recycling, the products are baled then transported by an Eden based haulage company to Mills in the UK for reprocessing.
